In conjunction with the launch of BlueScope Steel’s COLORBOND® Coolmax® steel roofing product a competition was launched at Sydney’s DesignEx in April 2010 – COLORBOND® Coolmax® ‘Cool Ideas’ competition. The winner was Jason Chambers from DesignInc, Adelaide, who netted himself a cash prize of $20,000.

According to BlueScope Steel:

“Architects, building designers and specifiers were asked to submit their ‘Cool Idea’ for a thermally efficient workplace in 25 words or less. With 567 entries submitted, Jason’s was chosen as the winner by a panel of industry experts.”

Jason’s winning idea was – “Exterior walling that adapts to the seasons by changing colour. Black absorbs winter heat, white reflects summer heat. The bonus is an interchangeable building facade…chameleon.”

Justine, editor of Architecture Australia and a judge for the competition, explains: “We liked the idea of a building that responds to its environment, shifting and changing with the seasons. This gives a building both aesthetic and expressive potential, as well as the technical benefits of a cooler space. We also liked the use of words here and the evocative nature of the word chameleon to describe the concept – a tricky thing to do in just 25 words!”

Jason, who is a graduate architect at DesignInc, said: “I came up with this idea as I wanted to suggest something that BlueScope Steel could potentially develop in the future. I’m over the moon to have won and am planning on spending the winnings on improvements to my home and taking a well deserved holiday!”
