Families evacuated as Frankston units declared unsafe
Reading though the internet articles on this issue we felt a bit like the presenters of Media Watch. At least the Frankston Leader got the state right. AAP was quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald as “Residents evacuate Qld apartment block” although they did say the units were in Melbourne in the next line of the article.
All jokes aside it does not seem to be a very funny matter for the residents. The leader says that “Frankston Council said the block was examined by its building inspectors yesterday and an evacuation order was immediately issued.”
The Frankston Leader quotes a Council representative as saying: “the council had previously written to the Building Commission with concerns about the surveyor. A letter .. delivered to residents this morning, admits that an “Occupancy Permit should never have been issued by the Private Building Surveyor”.”
At this stage there is little reliable information about the circumstances and the nature of the issues. What is interesting is that it comes on top of a project (not directly related on which) we are working that is considering the importance of professional administrative practice for private building surveyor’s.
Through the research we have been considering possible correlations between professional practice and technical competence. The project is also considering the issue of corporate entities as the registered building surveying practitioner in lieu of natural persons and whether this might encourage more sustainable professional businesses.
Stayed tuned for more Frankston updates and the latest on the project.
