Sustainable window alliance say glass critical to energy efficiency

Nigel Carpenter from the Australian Glass and Glazing Association is quoted in this months Australian Building Regulation Bulletin as saying that “typical Australian homes can achieve an increase of 2 to 2.5 stars of energy efficiency by simply changing from the worst performing to the best performing windows.”
The research undertaken by Dr Peter Lyons for the Sustainable Windows Alliance investigated the economic and scientific basis for high performance windows. The study considers both window and framing options.
Nigel summarises the key findings as being:

  • Moving from the worst performing windows to the best performing windows can give a home an AccuRate star rating increase of between 2 and 2.5 stars
  • Appying passive solar design principles can provide further improvement by up to 1 stair
  • Different locations within Australia require different glazing solutions, and within that, even different orientations of the building benefit from different window solutions.

We are following up a copy of the paper and will post it on this website shortly with a link.
